Statement

Based in Chalkhill Studio Olivers Battery, Winchester. Originally trained and worked as a nurse and always painted in her spare time,   Karen achieved her lifetime dream when she had the opportunity to study Fine Art at Winchester School of Art and Design.

She has exhibited throughout the UK.

Karen’s love for painting continues to develop and her work is often expressive, dreamlike and captures a sense of place . Karen enjoys working across media including her new paintings on glass.

She is trying to explore painting from a deeper level often relating to personal visual experiences of her everyday life. Karen’s painting has a more intuitive approach, which she develops through self reflection and spending time walking her dogs. In the studio she often has her favourite music playing whilst painting as a means of reaching the subconscious. landscapes, skies, countryside and wildlife appear throughout her work along with things that are part of a personal journey and history, the work embraces life experiences from both the past and present, exploring memories and trajectories of everyday life. Karen works in many different mediums and feels it is important to relate it to the landscape or study she is painting. Recently she has been painting on Glass and Slate. The glass paintings are fused in layers which gives a 3D appearance to the work.

“Landscapes and skies are often overlooked, they surround us and yet can be missed as we are caught up in our busy lives , I capture them on my phone and sketch on site, I like the idea they are part memory and part real. I have an intuitive approach to painting preferring to explore the colours of dreams rather than reality” They become part real and part of my dreamscape. They allow me to free myself from the reality of the everyday”
