Statement
Paul studied and qualified in Landscape Architecture at Cheltenham Art College and in Fine Art (painting) at the Southampton Institute and is a fellow of the Landscape Institute. He has been practicing as an artist and landscape architect in Hampshire for over 25 years, designing and creating a number of award winning projects. He has always had a passion for painting but in recent years he has been encouraged to scale up his painting activity, having paintings selected for exhibition at the ‘New Forest Open Art’ exhibitions, summer exhibitions at the Rum’s Eg Gallery in Romsey and the ‘Four Seasons exhibition’ at the Southampton City Art Gallery. Paul was selected to be a ‘Wild Card’ painter in one of the heats of the Sky Landscape Artist of the year 2018.
Paul is particularly drawn to painting landscapes and seascapes. He likes to create texture, often using pastes, sometimes with gold leaf and mostly with the distinctive use of reflective paints to capture and reflect light in the work. This gives the paintings dynamic effects under different lighting conditions.
His evolving exhibition ‘Landscape Reflections‘ opened at ‘Art at the Morgue’ at the Five Bells in Buriton in April 2015 and has travelled to the Phoenix arts centre in Bordon, The Art café in Winchester, the Queen Elizabeth Country Park near Petersfield and The Allen Gallery in Alton. He is now regularly selling his original paintings and limited edition prints online and through a number of Hampshire Art Galleries and shops and is increasingly taking commissions. Paul has now sold over 80 paintings with works in collections across the UK and in America, the Caribbean, Switzerland and Australia.
