Sheila Lockyer – Artist & Printmaker

I have been drawing and painting for over 30 years and, following a career in IT, now concentrate on developing my work as an artist and printmaker. I completed both a Foundation in Art & Design at West Dean College and a Foundation in Printmaking at Red Hot Press in 2014.

My inspiration comes from the natural environment where I enjoy working from sketches made on location and, more recently, using found materials to develop my printmaking practice.

In Printmaking, I concentrate on developing expertise in Intaglio techniques including Etching, Solar Plate Etching and Drypoint and, more recently, Monoprinting using foliage gathered whilst out walking at home (especially during lockdown!) or when on holiday.

In painting, I enjoy working with a variety of water-based media (watercolour, gouache, acrylic and ink) as well as using different techniques for incorporating texture into my work.

I enjoy ‘focusing in’ on subjects and using the same or similar images to explore different techniques and media, and particularly enjoy the ‘happy accidents’ that can occur when developing artwork.

I have exhibited with groups at a variety of galleries including Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, St Barbe Museum and Gallery, Southampton City Art Gallery Foyer, The Oxmarket Gallery, Winchester Discovery Centre and The Hansard Gallery Shop.

I am a member of Red Hot Open Access Print Workshop, Chandlers Ford Art Group and Winchester Art Club.
